1984

April 03, 2008

A while ago I read Animal Farm (O Triunfo dos Porcos) and I really liked! A tiny book and a really nice story. Now I've finished another book by George Orwell, 1984.

Rating: 5 out of 5

I usually read books in a short time. I can spend one whole afternoon reading a 400 pages book, but this time it was different. The book as three parts, in which the story context changes a lot. In the first part I had to stop reading the book, it was too dark for me. Not the dark as in Dracula, or some other horror book, but in a grey way, describing the world as a boring and horrible place to live.

For one month the book stood still on my shelf until I walked in Bertrand, a bookshop I really enjoy, and I saw the book I want to read next (mental note: go and buy ASAP!) That night I started to read the book again and then I entered the second part, where some hope was given (actually that's in the end of part 1, but you'll get it). Then I couldn't stop again and read it all as another book and I must say I loved it. Weird feelings about the end remain, but you wouldn't want me to spoil you, would you?

I must take my hat off to George Orwell for his remarkable and brilliant imagination!

New backpack!

January 26, 2008

After some months wandering around some shops looking for a new backpack, I finally found one that is not ugly and fits my needs. Finally I bought Case Logic SKU-NBP-3 in FNAC for 60 euros. It's not a 13.3" backpack (I couldn't even find one) but it's not big. In fact, with my Macbook I can't feel it on my back or shoulders. It's so much lighter than my temporary messenger bag.

Also, other of the things I was worried about was the fact that it was too shiny and would attract robbers (seems like macs are envied the most), so this one doesn't give out there's a computer inside. Actually, it looks like one of my elementary school backpacks!

One thing you also might be interested in is what can go inside. Although I would prefer a one-sectioned backpack, this one has two (one for computer and other for documents). As I don't normally take paper with me, I use that one for my mouse, mousepad and charger. Take a look around the pictures if you want to know more.

The Net 2.0 (review)

January 19, 2008
Rating: 1 out of 5

When I was a little kid I loved The Net, the TV series. Watching Angela Bennett running away from The Praetorians made my day. Oh, and now I know where did I know Eric Szmanda from! Then I saw the movie featuring Sandra Bullock (that was released 2 years before the series) and I really wished it was Brooke Langton playing Angela. But the storyline was really awesome.

Yesterday I saw The Net 2.0 I was so disappointed! It was just a repetition of the first movie with another character, set and a few details changed. It really sucked! And there was not the context of the first movie: The “Big Brother” fear America was feeling (BTW, I am reading 1984 now!). You can guess pretty much what’s happening next, and the story makes no sense. Oh, and for a geeky movie, the most awesome things were an ugly pocketpc, a tablecpc and a stupid holographicish sphere screen.

I really hope the next movies of this genre I will see ( The Pirates of Silicon Valley and Hackers ) do really worth it.

PocketIE vs DeepFish

September 11, 2007

2 months ago I introduced Microsoft DeepFish, the new browser for Windows Mobile devices, still in beta. Thanks to Fábio I was able to try that version in my TyTN.

Once you navigate to a website, the first thing you’ll see, is a overall image of the website. Like a resized screenshot of the desktop browser. Then you have to zoom to the part that interests you. To read some text, you’ll have to scroll both horizontal and vertically, what just sucks! And regarding the menus, it requires various clicks for something basic. One thing I really enjoyed was the scrolling drag of the page.

Pocket IE is the traditional browser that renders the content for the PDA resolution. Almost all the websites fit the window and you only need scrolling vertically, which is very good while reading text (and the TYTN scroolwheel is just marvelous!). The left button has also the most probable action you’ll take (favorites or back, depending on the situation) and that makes the navigation truly easy and fluid.

When on my PDA I visit almost only blogs, twitter, gmail, google reader (ok, and flickr once in a while), so I’ll keep using PocketIE that gives me exactly the kind of presentation I want for the content I visit. I guess Microsoft is on the wrong path here.

Death Note review

June 28, 2007

I’ve always been a fan of anime since I was a kid, and more recently I started to revive that spirit. I am now the webmaster and admin of anime-p2pt, one of the greatest Portuguese anime community. In the beginning of the year, I stopped to see anime, but I continued to follow Death Note as it was being released.

One of the best anime I ever seen

Jun 28, 2007 by Alcides Fonseca photo of 'Death Note'

★★★★★ Death Note is the story of Yagami Light, an brilliant student that is somehow bored of the world he lives him. Feeling the same way, a Shinigami (Death God) drops his Death Note into the humans world. But this is no ordinary notebook, the owner has the power to kill someone by writing his name while having him in mind.

Light takes the notebook laid on the floor and reading its rules, realizes that he has the power to create a perfect world. From that moment on, he writes everyday names of criminals in the Death Note and starting his mass murdering.

People start to realize this and some think of him as Kira, the God who will save the world from its rotness. However others feel it's a crime against humanity and the greatest detective of all time is called to solve this case.

No one knows him, or know where he lives, or even know its real name. He answers by the alias of "L".

L and Light both want the other one death, but how will L find out who is this mysterious Kira that kills everyone like magic? Or will Light find out L's real name, so he can kill him and continue his task to clean the world?

This was one of the best animes I ever saw. Despite being very busy in the latest times, this was the only anime I've saw. It was frustrating to wait one week until the next episode. The tension was in every episode and the argument is brilliant! Starting from the point I described, a lot of tactics are used, more characters are introduced, most of them happen to die, and the end is unpredictable.

Apart from the story, the other two things I appreciate in animes is the drawing and the soundtrack. As for the drawing and painting, they're very mature and dark, as the theme presented. From the middle to the end, they tend to be less perfect and more emotive, but I guess that's the way the story also goes.

As for the soundtrack, it is simply wonderful. The first part is based on instrumental sounds, from Yoshihisa Hirano and Hideki Taniuchi, and the vibrating opening and ending by Nitemare. As for the second part, Taniuchi Hideki authored the instrumental music and Maximum The Hormone played the opening and ending. This last band was a great finding for me since I'm a fan of both j-rock and hardcore, and made me get their full album, Buiiki Kaesu and I just loved.

One final note: After episode 11, please take a look at the Live-Action of Death Note. It is very interesting since the story is a lot different from the anime one, but the end is the same.

Good design, bad webdesign

June 21, 2007
3d glasses I've been a The Dandy Warhols fan for a long time. A few days ago I was checking their website and I was amazed by the designed used. It made me wish I had one of those 3d glasses so I could see the stereoscopy effect.

I think it was a great idea to make the website design like this, so it would stand out from the rest of websites. Mainly bands pick up good artists to make their website, because they like their visual art. However designers tend to be bad web designers. They lack the geekness needed for professional websites. In my work, I’ve dealt with designers that are good in traditional paper design, but when it comes down to the web, they just lack some skills.

If you notice the Dandy's website, although it has RSS and validates the code. It’s still displayed inside tables and iframes. This sucks when viewing the page in small screen devices like IE mobile, Opera Mobile and Mini (which you can test here). Web designers should know this stuff and how to get around that.

I gave Dandy Warhol's Website example as i could give a lot of them, and you probably know it by yourself. In my work I’ve dealed with a lot of designers, and when they “draw” something, they don’t even think how it would be displayed, if it’s even possible to do those effects, if it will run on mobile devices, if it would be accessible to disabled people and so on… It’s terrible to work with them if you can’t change the design and you know it’s bad.
